Wine has been a part of civilization for thousands of years. In Croatia it is tied to a long tradition of living off the land in this beautiful, but often harsh landscape.
Zinfandel, United states’ most beloved wine, actually comes from Croatia. Zinfandel and Italian wine Primitivo are both Crljenak Kastelanski, from the Croatian region Kaštela in Dalmatia. The Croatian climate appears ideal for wine grapes: warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters along the coast. Inland, there’s a shift to a continental climate, where it’s cold and snowy in the winter and hot and humid in the summer. Then there’s the “bura”, the northeasterly wind known to wreak havoc. These various climatic influences can often create a harsh growing environment for grapes. Crljenak has also been studied by Mike Grgich, native from Peljesac, founder and winemaker at Napa’s Grgich Hill Estate. In the 1950s, Grgich stumbled upon Crljenak vines upon arriving in the United States. Initially, he thought that they descended from Plavac Mali, Croatia’s most planted red grape, after he noticed the shape of the leaves and size of the berries. But as it turns out, Crljenak was actually a parent of Plavac Mali.
Enjoy a trip around the country’s premier wine growing region and taste the terroir of Croatia. You will travel along scenic roads among the scattered villages and hills covered with vineyards to meet some of the people responsible for bringing top class Croatian wine to the table of many local and international restaurants. Accompanying the group, there will be a sommelier with a true passion for Peljesac and its wines. Clients will have an opportunity to visit 2 wineries on Peljesac peninsula. On the way back, you will also visit a beautiful historic town of Ston, famous for its ancient salt factory and long defensive walls, followed by oyster tasting in Ston area. Oyster experience is unique gastronomic attraction. Sailing in a boat you will enjoy the untouched natural beauty of the protected eco system of Mali Ston bay. The entire experience also has an educational character since they gladly share their knowledge and experience about the process of cultivating oysters. You will learn how to gather oysters and open them in the midst of an oyster farm. At the end you will enjoy in tasting of world – famous oysters, just taken out of the sea, on floating dock surrounded by oyster beds.
