If you simply want to relax or if you want to get involved in some adventure sports, Cape Town offers you the best of both worlds.

Johannesburg

It is the second largest city in Africa. It is fondly known as the “city of gold”. The Cradle of Humankind is home to 40% of the planet human fossils making it one of the richest archaeological sites in the world. Don’t forget to visit the Hillbrow tower, the tallest tower in Africa with a height of 270 meters. You can overlook the entire city of Johannesburg from here. The Mandela house and the Apartheid musuem is a must visit during your trip.

It’s home to over 500 different bird species, 100 reptiles, 150 mammals and many archaeological sites. You can spot the “Big five” animals here - Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo. The park also offers different kinds of Safaris for the adventure seeker in you.

The Garden Route

The 300 kilometer long coastline route is the most scenic route in Africa. It starts from Mossel Bay and ends at Storms River. Enroute you will see whitesand beaches, lush green forests, serene towns and magnificent shores where you can savour some delicious seafood and watch whales play. Many tourists plan for a day-trip here. But there is so much more to explore so you may need a couple of more days to enjoy the Garden Route to the fullest.

The Drakensberg

The world famous Drakensberg mountain is 700 miles long passing through two countries and five South African provinces. Drakensberg translates to “mountain of dragons/dragon mountains” because of its gigantic size and stature. It is one of the preferred destinations for hikers around the world. This range has some stunning peaks for those perfect Instagram stories! It also has waterfalls, rock pools, mysterious caves and fresh mountain streams.

Must-Do Things in South Africa

Go on a Safari

What’s an African trip without a Safari? South Africa has many national parks and game reserves where you can spot the “Big Five” wildlife animals. Unlike Masai Mara or Serengeti, the chances of spotting the animals are 100% as the local guides know exactly where to find them. It is recommended to spend at least a couple of nights in one of the national parks to witness a one of its kind adventure.

Enjoy watersports

South Africa is a place where both the Atlantic ocean and the Indian ocean meet and offers a world-class surfing experience. Jeffrey’s Bay near Port Elizabeth is the most preferred surfing destination for tourists as it offers big waves and good breaks. If you want to dive, go  to Cape Town. With warm and cold ocean currents, you will find a lot of shores, reefs and kelp forests.

Learn Apartheid

Another major draw amongst the tourists is learning the Apartheid (the system of racial segregation and oppression) which was over the country from the 1940s to the 1990s. The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg (opened in 2001) highlights the history and legacy. Also, do visit the Constitutional Court. It is a former political prison where you can see the prison ruins and learn more about the political prisoners who were detained here for no reason.
