Places to Visit In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Jeddah

It is the second-largest city in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Situated on the Red Sea coast, Jeddah is one of the main entry points for pilgrims traveling to Mecca and Medina (the two most sacred cities) by air or sea. Jeddah has something in store for all kinds of travelers. Hence the motto “Jeddah is different”. The picturesque Jeddah waterfront, the famous Al Rahma mosque, the stunning Jeddah fountain, the historic Nassif House and Matbouli House museums attract millions of tourists and explorers. It is also a happening place for arts, music and mouth watering cuisines.

Yanbu

Yanbu which was once known only for trade activities is now turning into a tourist hotspot. It is one of the oldest and the second-largest seaport cities after Jeddah. Many tourists visit Yanbu by cruise from Jeddah, Egypt and Jordan. The city offers stunning views of the Red Sea. The Al-Bahr beach or the Royal commission beach is a great place for watersports like Scuba diving, Kayaking, or fishing. The coral reefs underneath are largely unexplored. Tourists can also enjoy horse riding and also get to see a wide range of bird species. Visit the Souq Al-Lail generally referred as the night market for buying dates, sweets and other local delicacies.

Dammam

Until 1938, Dammam was just an ordinary coastal village. After the discovery of oil, it rapidly transformed into a new-age metropolis. With the scenic views of the Arabian Gulf, lush green parks, waterfronts and clear beaches tourists are spoilt for choice. Muraj island or Coral island is a must-visit place. It is a man-made island to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life to a calmer and quiet place to relax and rejuvenate. King Abdulaziz Center for World culture is another exciting place to visit. It features an auditorium, library, cinema, exhibition hall, museum and archive. This center is featured in Times Magazine as one of the top 100 places to visit.

Riyadh

The capital city is also known as one of the wealthiest cities in the world. Riyadh has a nice blend of history and modernity. You can see some iconic monuments, traditional souks, and historical museums in one part of the city and world-class restaurants, malls and skyrises on the other side of the city. Some of the major attractions in Riyadh are Diriyah (a UNESCO world heritage site), Murabba palace, the Masamak Fortress and the Faisaliah Tower (known as the clock tower) as it used to have an art decorated clock on top of it.

Mecca

Mecca is considered to be the holiest city in the world of Islam. Prophet Muhammed was born here. It features the holiest and the largest mosque in the world “Masjid Al-Haram”. Muslims from all over the world visit this place every year as a pilgrimage trip known as Umrah and Hajj. The mosque has a massive floor space of 1.6 lakh yards that allows up to 1.2 million people to pray at the same time. The holiest water in the world is found in a well named “Zamzam”. A note, only Muslims are allowed to enter Mecca.

Medina

After Mecca, Medina is considered the next holiest city. The Al Masjid al Nabawi mosque takes the center stage in the city. Prophet Muhammed himself had built the mosque. It is also the same place where he was buried. A trip to Medina is a must on many Muslims' bucket lists as the city has played an important role in Prophet Muhammed’s life. The mosque is open 24 hours and can accommodate up to one million visitors. Apart from this, visitors can go to Quba mosque - the world’s first mosque and mount Uhud - the place where Prophet Muhammed led forces battled troops with Makkah. Unlike Mecca, non-muslims may enter Mediana but need to keep a distance from Al Masjid al Nabawi mosque.
